Battling against adverse weather to bring this project in on time, Mowlem Railways have won much acclaim from Railtrack in bringing into reality this depot in Southern England.

Working as a true partner, Mowlem Railways has been seen to act alongside Railtrack NLU throughout this project. Meeting local resident committees and working closely with the local community and the client to foster a ‘no blame’ culture, crucial to the successful completion of such an operationally intense project.

The welding depot itself is can be considered the most advanced in the world, using state of the art equipment to weld various grades and lengths of rail. This gives the plant capability to take full advantage of

Railtrack’s new fleet of delivery trains and to provide rail for high speed networks without the need for plant upgrades. The depot also importantly breaks a domestic monopoly on rail welding bringing competition and increased impetus for efficiency back to the supply chain.

The works were completed on time and within budget and also very importantly all of the specialist sub-contractors required were able to work together smoothly under the project leadership of Mowlem Railways.

Mowlem Railways have also been awarded a five year operating contract for the plant, becoming an integral part of Railtrack’s supply chain and proving that their skill portfolio goes well beyond the permanent way works they are known for.
